National Impact and Action – Programa de Pós-Graduação em Engenharia de Produção

The PPEGEP/PUC-Rio plays a strategic role in national, regional, and local engagement by consolidating its impact through the training of highly qualified professionals, support for new business and technological initiatives, the organization of scientific events, and active participation in research and public administration bodies. Over the 2021–2024 quadrennium, the Program collaborated with institutions such as UFJF through the PCI/MINTER and supported the creation of new businesses, including the startup LAMPS Co. In addition, alumni and current students hold prominent positions in companies such as Petrobras, MRS Logística, Raízen, CMM Offshore, DescarbonTech, and Casa da Moeda, as well as in universities and research centers across Brazil.

The PPEGEP also promotes national scientific events and actively participates in organizing and scientific committees of conferences such as ENEGEP and SBPO, further increasing its academic visibility. Its impact on public administration is evidenced through collaborations with bodies such as the National Secretariat for Civil Protection and Defense. The Program’s engagement is also reflected in the presence of its faculty on editorial boards of national scientific journals, participation in public service examination boards, and the receipt of prestigious national academic awards by both faculty and students/alumni.

It is worth highlighting that PPEGEP faculty members currently serve on the boards of Brazil’s leading scientific societies in Production Engineering, including ABEPRO, ANPEPRO, and SOBRAPO, as well as on the editorial boards of the most prominent national journals in the field, such as Production, Pesquisa Operacional (PO), Brazilian Journal of Operations & Production Management (BJOPM), and Gestão & Produção (G&P). Furthermore, throughout the quadrennium, PPEGEP students received awards at major national scientific conferences in Production Engineering, including ENEGEP, EPPGEP, and SBPO (e.g., Best Master’s Dissertations and Best Doctoral Theses).

📌 NATIONAL, REGIONAL, AND LOCAL FACULTY ENGAGEMENT

A) INTER-INSTITUTIONAL COOPERATION PROJECT FOR QUALIFICATION (PCI/MINTER)

Regarding its contribution to the advancement of research in the country, it is worth highlighting the completion of a PCI/MINTER cohort in 2022, carried out in partnership with the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF). UFJF is a recognized higher education institution in several fields but does not yet offer Master’s or Doctoral programs in Industrial Engineering. In fact, in the state of Minas Gerais, only the Federal University of Minas Gerais, the Federal University of Itajubá, and the Federal University of Ouro Preto have graduate programs (stricto sensu) in Industrial Engineering. It is important to note that the state of Minas Gerais has a strong industrial base, hosting large companies such as Mercedes, MRS, and ArcelorMittal.

The PCI/MINTER initiative involved a local coordinator at UFJF (Prof. Fernando Nogueira, http://lattes.cnpq.br/7429696739028899), a coordinator at PPGEP/PUC-Rio (Prof. Fernando Cyrino Oliveira), as well as the support and collaboration of PPGEP faculty members, who fostered a research environment in the Department of Industrial Engineering at UFJF through co-supervision and joint publications.

The PCI/MINTER cohort successfully graduated 15 Master’s students as planned, having received over a hundred applications. The courses were taught by PPGEP/PUC-Rio faculty at UFJF facilities, with participation from UFJF professors who were also involved in the research activities associated with PCI/MINTER. A large number of permanent faculty from PPGEP/PUC-Rio participated in teaching and supervision activities, all conducted in co-supervision with UFJF faculty, in accordance with the original plan. This initiative helped to strengthen research, supervision, and publication efforts at the graduate level for the UFJF team. Faculty members from UFJF’s Departments of Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Statistics were also involved in the process.

B) SUPPORT FOR BUSINESS INCUBATION, TECHNOLOGICAL HUBS, AND LOCAL PRODUCTION CHAINS

LAMPS Co is a startup co-founded by Professors Davi Michel Valladão and Alexandre Street, from PPGEP/PUC-Rio, and includes an alumnus of the program as its CTO. The company operates as an extension of LAMPS, the research lab at PUC-Rio, integrating data science and academic expertise into real-world market demands. LAMPS Co develops technological solutions for sectors such as electric power, oil & gas, and finance, applying optimization, statistics, and machine learning to promote innovation and operational efficiency. The company transforms academic research into technological products, delivering optimization and forecasting tools that support decision-making processes. With proven experience in R&D&I projects—including transmission optimization and market forecasting—LAMPS Co contributes to innovation and sustainability in the energy sector. Key partnerships include Energisa, Eletrobras, and Northland Power Inc. Additionally, LAMPS Co continuously expands its network of collaborators by establishing new partnerships with academic institutions, government agencies, and other companies in the energy sector.

C) TRAINING OF HUMAN RESOURCES FOR LOCAL, REGIONAL, AND NATIONAL ENGAGEMENT

PPGEP has a strong track record in training human resources for local and regional impact, having welcomed students from various Brazilian states during this quadrennium, including Amazonas, Pará, Sergipe, Pernambuco, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio Grande do Sul, as well as from cities in the interior of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The Program has also received students from abroad. After graduation, many alumni returned to their regions of origin to work in local higher education institutions (HEIs), contributing with knowledge and innovation.

Graduates of the Program are employed both in academia — at institutions such as USP, UEPA, UFVJM, ENCE, UFF, FGV, and IBMEC — and in industry (e.g., Petrobras, SAP, Raízen, Mercado Livre, Ipiranga, Ambev, Accenture, iFood, PSR, OLX, MRS, Globo, Stone, Casa da Moeda), holding positions ranging from analysts to vice presidents.
